The lecture titled “Where Do We Stand on Housing? What Are We Doing in the Meantime?” by architect Maria Sisternas is part of the Aixopluc exhibition, which can be visited until September 14 at L’Albergueria.

Reuse of land and buildings for the right to housing. For centuries, cities have been built upon the remnants of old structures. The heritage left to us by previous generations holds potential that must be wisely reused. The talk will review plans and projects in old towns, industrial estates, garden cities, self-built neighborhoods, and large unused heritage properties that have been unexpectedly repurposed. There is no need to consume large amounts of land; cities often offer opportunities to enjoy urban life in different ways or to assign new uses to existing spaces. This economically sensible approach also requires new urban planning tools and a more precise approach to the social transformation of cities.

Maria Sisternas

She is an architect from ETSAB-UPC and holds an MSc in City Design and Social Sciences from the London School of Economics. She has worked both independently and within the public administration, coordinating urban projects at the Barcelona City Council and developing land and housing policies at the Generalitat of Catalonia. She writes about current urban issues for Diari ARA and other specialized media outlets.
