Michèle & Miquel and Bordas + Peiro’s Oeuvre is the title of the conference in which the architectural studios Michèle & Miquel and Bordas + Peiro, two teams that develop their work both in France and Catalonia, present the main characteristic features of their work around the concept of materiality.
On the one hand, Michèle Orliac and Miquel Batlle, members of the Michèle & Miquel office, present the conference “Matter without being seen”. The architecture is made by the landscape’s matter and due to its too present materiality, it is forgotten. We will be able to see this in their projects through the wood in the forests of the Hortus, the terracotta in the Ville Rose of Toulouse, the iron in the rusty cliffs of Cap Roig and the granite in the heart of the stone abbey of Arles sur Tech.
On the other hand, Anna Maria Bordas and Miquel Peiro, members of Bordas + Peiro, in their presentation “Limit (s), System (s), Transformation (s). The poetics of matter in 21st century architecture” deal with the paradigm shift in the material and cultural conditions of architecture through the projects carried out in their office, and in the research developed at university.
After the speeches, a debate leaded by Montse Arnau from the COMPAC company will take place, in which a reflection on the subject will emerge.
Michèle&Miquel
based in Toulouse and Barcelona, from where they carry out all their projects in common.
Both have been professors of the master’s degree in Landscape Architecture at the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB), and guest lecturers at the schools of architecture in Lyon, Alcalá de Henares, and at the school of landscape architecture in Versailles. They have also participated in various conferences and publications and have developed work in the research field at the ETSAB’s Barcelona Landscape Research Centre.
Michèle Orliac is an architect from the Toulouse School of Architecture and holds a degree in Urbanism from the Le Mirail University of Social Sciences in Toulouse. She also has a master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB) and is a member of the French Federation of Landscape Architects.
As a consultant, Orliac has advised the Ministry of Equipment of the Basque Country and the region of Lavelanet, in Ariège (1976-1978), the Council of Architecture, Urbanism and Environment of the region of the Atlantic Pyrenees (1979) and was the director of the Pyrenees-Orientales region since its creation in 1980.
Miquel Batlle is an architect from the Barcelona School of Architecture, specialised in Urbanism, and with a master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the same university.
Bordas+Peiro
In 2011 they founded Bordas + Peiro, an architecture and engineering firm in Paris from which they carry out a theoretical practice of the design process in architecture. They work both in France and internationally, in different works ranging from small public facilities to large-scale urban projects, to various infrastructure projects.
As an office, they have received different architecture awards such as the AJAC Award (2012), the 40under40 (2014) and the A + Awards (2018-2020 and 2022) for different projects.
Anna Maria Bordas is an architect from the Marne la Vallée school in Paris, an engineer of roads, canals and ports, and a professor at the Val de Seine School of Architecture in Paris in the discipline of architectural and urban theory and design. She is also a researcher at the Architectural Research Laboratory of the Université de Paris - Cerilac.
For more than 15 years, she has been teaching at the Marne la Vallée, Marseille and Val de Seine schools of architecture in France, and has been a guest lecturer at the UIR in Rabat and at the School of Civil Engineering in Valencia.
She has recently curated the exhibition “Limit (s), System (s), Transformation (s). The poetics of matter in 21st century architecture”, which has been shown at the Paris Val de Seine School of Architecture and which will start touring different schools of architecture as from September.
In 2021, Architizer magazine named her one of the 100 women to watch in architecture.
Miquel Peiro is an engineer of roads, canals and ports. He is currently a professor at the School of Architecture of Brittany, in the discipline of Construction and Technology, a visiting professor at the Schools of Architecture of the Vallès and Valencia, and a researcher at the Architectural Research Laboratory of the University of Rennes 2 - GRIEF.
In 2020, he was the director of the International Congress "Evolutionary and reversible architecture" which took place in Rennes, as well as the director of the recently published book on the subject.
